This started out as a nice purchase. It arrived on time and in nice packaging. The only downfall is when it came time to use it, it sucked. I am a culinary student who's required to temp most food before serving it. This thermometer takes forever to read the actual temp. It will start at about 40 degrees and slowly go up about 1-3 degrees at a time until it reaches the actually temperature. That means I'm standing there for mintutes just waiting to see if my chicken is 165. I've tried calibrating it multiple times , thinking the calibration could be off. All is nice in that sense, it's just a slow read thermometer. It is not practical in a busy kitchen lifestyle. I will be in the search for a different Thermometer.

I'm a chef. This doesn't turn on instantly. I have to constantly press buttons on it untill it actually turns on. Also, if I'm temping things while inside the combi(hot air blowing everywhere) the thing turns off and u have to go through the cycle of trying to urn it back on...while my proteins are overcooking because of this delay in usage.Doesn't seem like it can handle external temps of 450-500. The clip also is made of flimsy metal that doesn't bend back we'll if you accidently have it yanked out of your sleeve. If you work in a restaurant kitchen settings don't waste your money.

I wish I had known this "NSF" approved thermometer could not be calibrated before I purchased it. Local health codes in Indiana require that thermometers be calibrated to keep them accurate. This one arrived reading 2 to 3 degrees F lower than it should, and there's nothing we can do about it. I called a company rep, and she said 2 to 3 degrees was within standards. Maybe close enough for Taylor, but not for professional use. In addition, three other more expensive Taylor thermometers I've purchased in the past year have all gone south for one reason or another. I'm looking for a new supplier.

Although the probe senses the correct temperature, as soon as the unit gets heated by ambient heat, say from the barbecue grill, the display goes blank and the probe temperature is no longer visible. As soon as I remove the probe from heat, the display comes back on again. This is repeatable and consistent each and every time the handle gets exposed to heat so it is useless for use with a barbecue which is what I bought it for. I can't be sure if mine is just defective or they are all heat sensitive, but beware of this possible issue.

This thermometer is a daily workhorse in our restaurant to accurately measure food temps and water temps. Keeps working despite the probe and lower part getting daily doses of water. Easy on/off button, large digital readout reduces mistakes. Only downside is eventually the readout gets a little cloudy over time. It's very water-resistant, but don't submerge completely in water.

I bought this to use at work with microwaved lunches and BBQing at home. We have another digital thermometer in the kitchen with a probe with a more slender diameter and it reads temperature nearly real-time. This thermometer takes about a second before temperature changes start registering and then a few more to settle on the final temperature. Useful enough overall but difficult to use on the grill because of it's slow read. The display is easy enough to read and the button is easy to press. Most useful if you're not dancing around a hot grill.

I only purchased this to replace the very same model that I owned almost 20 years and somehow recently misplaced. So yeah I've used this thermometer for that long. It's never failed to work, is extremely accurate, and I believe I replaced the battery but once in all those years of ownership. I expect the same reliability from the new one. Also I've killed more than a couple of meat thermometers by water damage but this one is truly waterproof. Great item.

I was a "Senior Member" of the Instrument Society of America, spent years designing industrial measurement and control systems -- this is a very nice little instrument. Quick check shows it is accurate at boiling point of H2O, reads in a few seconds, holds reading ... can't ask for more at this price! Suggest that "waterproof" is only for emergencies (no pun intended.) Although battery compartment sealing looks OK I never trust keypad and display sealing for prolonged immersion.

I have worked in a foodservice setting for the last 15 years, and this is one of the best single-piece probe thermometer I've used. Most who work in food have seen the health department and their probe thermometers with the wire to a hand held unit, this is much simpler than the ones our company gave us to use, similar to the health department units, and just as accurate.Yes, there is the waterproof 'issue' but if you were a nice employee, handling equipment with clean hands or clean gloves, a nice wipe of the unit with a towel dampened in sanitizer solution; there would be no fogging and inoperability issues.I ordered this to replace an exact same unit, but in black, that I *thought* I lost during the Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, CA; only to be going through some cabinets in our mobile concession stand a week later and found it. It slid down behind the box of disposable gloves!!! So now I have my work thermometer (black) and a backup in my bag, in case it ever decides to disappear again!!!P.S. I've had my black Taylor thermometer since late 2010! Just recently replaced the battery and it is EXACTLY the same as this yellow unit.

This is easily the best thermometer I've used for food. It's very durable, reads accurately/quickly, and it I feel comfortable using this around the grill or oven. I ran through about 3 over the last 2 months with most of them breaking quickly. Best one I have used to date.
